Gurith had one hand flat on the back of the door, trying to hold it shut, and the other tight around the strap of her shoulder pack so it wouldn’t fall off and land in something nasty. She was nearly done, thank the gods, when she heard the sound off to the right: a jingle [...]

Oh, hell. I’ve got horses and saddles and reins on the brain. But it’s not my fault, I swear it! (I’ll blame it on Storm Large and her wickedly fun and funny video. Yes, I will. Because I can. I want a long red wig and a pony too! -pouts-)
Either way, July is over. Or [...]

I’m getting ready to head off to the Northwest Roasters Group event in Seattle, and I won’t be back until February has already begun (and god knows I won’t get a damn thing written while I’m there because I’ll be too busy drinking coffee, talking coffee, eating (oh, yes!), and hanging out with some of [...]

It’s a new year.

Yes, I know that’s both an obvious statement and one that’s a bit overdue, as it’s been a new year for more than a week at this point. Almost two. Usually I’m a day-one, fresh-start, on-the-money kind of girl. Rip-roaring through my goal setting on January 1, stating them publicly, keeping track…you [...]

I woke up this morning with that voice in my head. If you’re a writer, you probably know the one. The one that says, “I’m not good enough.” The one that says, “You’ve wasted your whole life and what have you written?” The one that says, “This is supposed to be the Year of the [...]

Month 2: Writing Plan

Here we go, short and sweet, my daily writing goals for the month of February:

1 hour novel
1 hour proposals
1/2 hour creative
1/2 hour business
1 hour email
4 hours freelance

Ack. Nervous about making this happen. But determined too. Mantra, say it with me, “No more freelance than what you’ve already got. No more freelance.” Thank you.

Yep, I realize I’m a bit late in setting my week four plan. Yes, I also realize that it’s nearly the end of the month and–gulp–I will have to then give not only my week four “did I do it?” but my month one “did I do it?” Ack.
Let’s just say, for the record, that [...]

Round up:
Week 1: Cool as Cat
Week 2: Sick as Dog
Week 3: Busy as Bee
Thus ends my first three weeks of the new year and new goals. That’s a very simplistic version, of course. But let’s just say that I’ve already worked 44 hours this week, and my week doesn’t even start until Tuesday. And that’s [...]

Last week was a definite success. I feel like I accomplished a great deal on my goals–more than I expected, for sure. On the other hand, I woke up Sunday morning (which is the beginning of my weekend), and realized that I was somehow behind on my freelance work. On my “days off” (Sunday and [...]

So far, so good, I must say. This “work by the hour” thing seems to be the key that’s opening the book-length doors.
A recap:

It’s been hard to keep the creative short works to half an hour. I find myself working away and then going, “oh crap,” and looking at my timer to realize it says [...]

Well, it kind of worked. Which was about what I expected. So far, so good.
The plan, and how it’s panning out:

1 hour proposals: Totally working. I can get a lot done, and I feel good about it at the end of the hour. The easy parts of my first proposal are almost finished, which means [...]

As I mentioned in the last post, setting long-term goals is harder for me than setting short-term goals. Or, rather, setting goals for long projects is harder than setting goals for short projects. One of the reasons for that, I think, is that long projects don’t have deadlines.
I’m very deadline driven — if I know [...]

Breaking It Down

Big goals are hard for me. Write a novel. Create a proposal for a non-fiction book. Edit an anthology.
Small goals? Easier. Write a short story. Create a blog entry. Edit a poem.
It seems like the easy way to accomplish big goals would be to break them into little parts. Write a chapter. Create a character. [...]
